What are NOTICE, HOLD and LEAD?

How long does each tier take?

NOTICE runs as a half day for parents. HOLD is one day. LEAD is one day, plus one day for HOLD if leaders have not already taken it.

Do we have to run all three?

No. Most schools start with one tier and add the others across the year. Running all three is what creates a single response across staff, leadership and home.

Which tier should a form tutor take?

HOLD. It is built for the adults who see the same young people every week and need to notice early, stay present, and hand over with continuity of care.

Are the three tiers available in German?

Yes. All tiers are delivered in English and German, with separate cohorts for each language.

Our frameworks

NOTICE, HOLD, LEAD

Three tiers of Youth Mental Health Response, so every adult around a young person is trained for the part they actually play.

A parent, a form tutor and a deputy head meet the same young person at different moments and with different authority. Training them identically wastes everyone's time. These three tiers share one framework, ANCHOR, and split by role.

NOTICE - parents, half a day

For parents who want to be useful when their own child is shifting, struggling or pulling away: reading early signs, opening a conversation that does not close in thirty seconds, and knowing when to involve the school.

HOLD - teachers and pastoral staff, one day

For the adults who see young people every week: spotting early signs in a busy timetable, staying present in a supportive conversation, and handing a student on with continuity of care rather than a dropped thread.

LEAD - leaders and counsellors, one day

For heads of pastoral care, deputy heads, counsellors and directors: referral pathways, documentation, parent communication, supervising responders, and building the environment that makes the other two tiers work.

Why the tiers connect

Each tier teaches the same ANCHOR steps, so a student who is met by a parent at home and a tutor at school gets one response rather than three improvised ones. Escalation between tiers is rehearsed, not assumed.

What it is built on

The programme is inspired by Mental Health First Aid and grounded in the mental health literacy research, but the curriculum and the ANCHOR model are authored by Let's Be Real and adapted to the needs of each role.

How schools sequence it

A common pattern is HOLD for staff early in the autumn term, a NOTICE parent evening in the same term, and LEAD for the pastoral leadership team before policy review. English and German cohorts run separately.
