How to build a whole-school mental health strategy
1. Start with an audit, not an initiative
Your school probably already does a lot: counselling, tutor time, assemblies, parent evenings. The question is whether it is joined up. Map what exists, who owns it, and where concerns currently get lost before you add anything new.
2. Build the three layers
- Understand: a shared mental health language for students, staff and parents.
- Respond: every adult knows how to notice, talk and hand over safely.
- Embed: leadership, policy and measurement keep it alive beyond one enthusiastic person.
3. Name owners and time
A strategy without a named, resourced lead fades within a year. Put mental health on the leadership agenda, give it protected time and connect it to your safeguarding structure.
4. Decide how you will know it is working
Choose a small number of measures before you start: staff confidence, speed of referrals, student voice. Review them termly and adjust. A strategy is a cycle, not a document.
3. Embed
