What teachers should and shouldn't do when a student discloses distress

Do

  • Give them your attention, even if you only have a few minutes.
  • Use their words back to them so they feel heard.
  • Tell them it was right to speak to you.
  • Explain what you will do next and who you will tell.
  • Record the facts and pass them on the same day.

Don't

  • Promise to keep it a secret.
  • Ask leading questions or push for detail.
  • Minimise ("Everyone feels like that") or judge.
  • Offer a diagnosis or your own therapy.
  • Carry it alone: talk to your safeguarding lead and look after yourself.
