My teenager says "I'm fine" - what should I do?

Why teenagers say "I'm fine"

It can mean they don't have the words yet, don't want to worry you, fear a big reaction or simply want privacy. None of these mean they don't need you.

What you can say instead of asking again

  • "OK. I'm around later if you change your mind."
  • "You seem a bit tired lately. Nothing to explain, I just noticed."
  • "If it ever isn't fine, you can tell me and I won't freak out."

When to look closer

Watch for changes that last and spread: withdrawing from friends, losing interest in things they loved, changes in eating or sleep, falling grades, or comments like "what's the point?". If you see these, have a calm conversation and consider talking to their school or doctor.
